Brand New's The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me was reviewed in Life! today.
This house posits reviewer Yeow Kai Chai to be a pretty shitty reviewer, for the following reasons:
Firstly, Brand New was labelled under emo rock, which clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding about the entire progressive / experimental / post-punk nature of the band. I say post-punk because their earlier material was quite punk oriented. Nevertheless, Brand New isn't emo rock the way, say, 30 Seconds to Mars is.
Secondly, he wrote this: "Sonically, they are now a cut above kiddie rock menace The Chemical Romance and closer to veterans Green Day, plus a good dose of Evanescence with the testosterone pumped up." There is so much I have to comment on this.
- There is no such band as The Chemical Romance, you stupid!
- Brand New and Green Day are completely different genres of music; even in its punkier stages, the former was extremely groundbreaking in terms of experimentation with alternative sounds. Green Day has maintained constant appeal to the masses with its multiple 3 chord / 4 chord songs, which admittedly it has been quite talented at.
- What the fuck is "a good dose of Evanescence with the testosterone pumped up"?? Are you insinuating that Brand New is catchy radio rock-disguised-as-metal with a fag-sounding Jesse Lacey on vocals? Do you have a fetish for she-male growling while you're jerking off? Are you deaf?
If you aren't a fan, don't review the music... Simple as that. With that, I rest my case.
