silk cut & lovin' it

vertigo comic's constantine: hellblazer graphic novels act like a powerful soporific on my views on hell and about smoking being uncool.

i love the series.

when i first picked up the hardcover book all his engines (which pretty much was a one time spinoff from the normal series, a beautifully written and illustrated story set to coincide with the release of the movie), i fell instantly in love with it. otensibly dark, magically dramatic... film noir at its awesome best.

not to mention mr hi-i'm-john-and-i'm-an-asshole constantine and his silk cut smokes.

so right now the deal goes like this - each time i close a case, i'll head down to kino at taka and pick me up an issue of hellblazer.

a man's gotta have something to look forward to, yeah?

anyhow.. i was out with a friend (actually, she's a prospect and it was on the pretext of a business meeting, but i guess we're pretty good pals by now), and i basically fell prey to that sinful line so often spewed forth by the satanic cult worshippers of the demon goddess kali (read: women)

"aiya... you know you want it lionel... so just buy it."

crap.

so it was that i found myself gleefully unwrapping hellblazer: original sins on the train home yesterday.

thank goodness i closed a case today to make up for it.

anyway, i must say i was initially rather disappointed when i flipped through the pages. i mean, its seriously 80's style art, and i'd been expecting really gorgeous illustrations along the lines of those in all his engines. looking back... fuck man, what was i thinking? these were collections of the entire constantine storyline dating back from the eighties, for chrissakes.

yet despite the initial letdown, i was entranced after the first 20 pages. the allure of the series is incredible; would i be exaggerating if i said that the appeal of the stories within transcend time?

i doubt it. its that good.

i suppose its something like louis vuitton. every rich bitch claims the monogram design transcends time i.e its a timeless classic, worth every cent etc etc bah bah black sheep have you any wool, whatsoever fuck.

ah well. to each his own poison, yep. as our dear friend constantine points out,

"there's more than one road to hell."

see you there, my friend.
